Mosque of Konitsa
It is one of the two Muslim mosques that existed in the city of Konitsa and the only one that survives until today. It was built circa 1540 in an ideal location on the outskirts of the city, towards the Aoos river (Lakka district). Although there are no reliable testimonies, Sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent 1520-1566 is considered its founder. The mosque suffered a lot of damage from the locals, from abandonment and from the 1996 earthquake. The mosque is complemented by a hexagonal Muslim tomb (turbes) and a two-level building, which used to be a school-kindergarten and today hosts a photographic exhibition about the historical course of Konitsa. The second mosque, called Hussein Siah, was located near the central square, where today the church of Agios Kosmas the Aetolian overtops in the area, and was built circa 1500 by Sultan Bayazit II.
