HISTORY

Middle School (Scholarcheio) of Vourbiani

This Middle School of Vourbiani was the fruit of efforts by the ‘Education-supporting Brotherhood of Vourbaniots’, founded in 1883 in Athens. In the school year 1888-89, the ‘Regular Greek School’ (6 grades) started operating at a new building, the construction of which had begun in 1885 near the ‘old school’ site. This operated as a Middle School, a Girls' School, and a Boys' School. Later a Boarding House was erected on the premises where children from nearby villages, as well as from the region of Kolonjë (Erseka) and Leskovik, in neighbouring Albania, stayed. Books and stationery were supplied to the school by the Brotherhood and its operation was supervised by the Metropolitan of Vella and Konitsa. The Middle School (Scholarcheio) of Vourbiani operated under this regime until 1913, when the region became part of the Greek state, and the school was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. In 1918, due to a landslide, the site of the school was declared inappropriate, and it was decided that a new building should be erected in 1925. Construction was completed in 1929.
